When your opponent activates a Normal or Quick-Play Spell Card or effect, or a monster effect, while you control a Zombie monster and "Call of the Haunted" (except during the Damage Step): Your opponent tosses a coin and their activated effect becomes the following effect. ● Heads: "Your opponent must banish 1 monster they control". ● Tails: "You must banish all monsters you control". You can only activate 1 "Vortex of Time" per turn.
Vortex of Time — Power Evaluation
Final Score: 43 ± 8 · Confidence: Medium
- Intrinsic: 40 · Deck: 45 · Meta: provisional
- Primary role: Removal / Negation
Why it scores here
Vortex of Time converts a broad trigger (any Normal or Quick-Play Spell activation, or any monster effect) into a 50/50 coin flip: heads costs the opponent one monster, tails costs you your whole board. Its real value depends on Call of the Haunted and a Zombie already being on the field, which the deck evidence (86 of 86 decks run Call of the Haunted) supports as a live condition in its shell, but the coin-flip downside and the lack of recorded combo boards keep it from scoring as a reliable interaction piece. High deck counts confirm it is played in a real shell, not that it is strong in isolation.
Axis scores
| Axis | Score | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Accessibility | 45 | Quick-Play, live on the opponent's turn, but only usable when Call of the Haunted and a Zombie are already controlled; 86 of 86 sampled decks run Call of the Haunted (observed). |
| Combo & Conversion | 30 | No recorded combo boards (total_combos 0), so conversion rests on the text alone: a single coin flip with no board-building output (inferred). |
| Resource Economy | 35 | Heads nets the opponent a banished monster, but tails forces you to banish all your monsters, so expected card advantage is roughly neutral with high variance (inferred from text). |
| Effect & Interaction | 45 | Triggers on Normal/Quick-Play Spell and monster effect activations, but it redirects the activation rather than negating it, and the result is a coin toss (verified from text). |
| Material Utility | 5 | A Spell card with no material value and no level, attribute, or name to contribute (verified from card type). |
| Resilience & Flexibility | 25 | Once per turn, and its condition depends on Call of the Haunted staying face-up and a Zombie staying on the field, so one removal or destruction can switch it off (inferred). |
| Deck-Building Efficiency | 40 | Narrow, dead without the Call of the Haunted shell, and 60 of 86 decks run it as a single copy, so it costs a slot that only pays off in one archetype family (observed plus inferred). |
Calculation
Weight profile: Removal / Negation primary, no secondary blend (1.00). Intrinsic ≈ 40, Deck ≈ 45, Meta = provisional. Modifiers: none. Final formula: 0.40*Intrinsic + 0.60*Deck
Strengths
- Triggers on any Normal or Quick-Play Spell activation or any monster effect, which gives it wide reach on the opponent's turn
- Heads outcome forces the opponent to banish a monster they control, a real board cost to them
- Live in 86 of 86 sampled decks alongside Call of the Haunted, showing a consistent home in the Zombie shell (observed)
Weaknesses
- Needs Call of the Haunted and a Zombie already on the field, so it is dead in hand otherwise
- Tails forces you to banish every monster you control, a self-inflicted board wipe with a 50% chance
- Redirects the activation rather than negating it, so it does not stop the opponent's card or effect outright
- No recorded combo boards, so its practical conversion value is unmeasured
Counters / choke points
- Removing or destroying Call of the Haunted or your Zombie removes its activation condition (inferred)
- Opponents who play around the once-per-turn limit or avoid activating Spells and monster effects while you control the shell reduce its trigger rate (inferred)
Best use
Conditional interaction with a coin-flip board effect, not a reliable negation. Decks: Call of the Haunted Zombie shells (Eldlich, Vampires, Zombies). Suggested copies: 1.
Evidence & gaps
- Verified: Card text: opponent Normal/Quick-Play Spell or monster effect trigger, coin flip with heads banish-one and tails banish-all-yours outcomes, once per turn; Spell card with no ATK, DEF, level, or attribute; 86 sampled decks run it, 100% co-occurrence with Call of the Haunted and Pumpking the King of Grave Ghosts; Usage statistics show 100% inclusion in the Zombies archetype at 1 typical copy
- Observed: Copies per deck average 1.5 (60 decks at 1 copy, 17 at 3 copies); Distinct archetype count of 16 across the sampled decks, with Eldlich the largest at 47.7%
- Inferred: Expected card advantage is roughly neutral because the heads and tails outcomes are symmetric in count but not in board cost; Its condition is fragile to removal of Call of the Haunted or the Zombie
- Data gaps: no combos supplied, so combo conversion is text-only inference no banlist token, assumed 3 copies (unlimited) no RulingS or FAQ entries for coin-flip and redirect interactions with the Call of the Haunted timing guides_evidence has one guide snippet, which is anecdotal and not a measured sample
